Instructions
Who: Work individually to plan a lesson using the principles of Universal Design for Learning
What: Each member of your Professional Learning Community will choose one unit learning goal and write a lesson that addresses that learning goal.
When: Work at your own convenience.
Where: Work at your own convenience.
Why: Members of professional learning communities work individually to prepare lessons. Although they have common learning goals and common assessments, they have individual freedom to teach the content in the way they perceive to be best for their class. They often share strategies and teaching techniques that worked well when teaching various concepts.
Universal Design for Learning is a teaching method that encourages a teacher to consider various learning needs in their classroom and address those needs by offering multiple ways to present content, engage in content, and all students multiple ways to express their learning. By planning for students needs, they develop teaching and learning strategies that benefit all students.
Tasks
This activity is designed to be completed individually.
- Each member of the Professional Learning Community selects a Learning Goal from the unit you have been working on. Determine which unit learning goal each member of the PLC will address in their lesson. Each member of the PLC should choose a different learning goal.
- Write a lesson objective. Using a “Students will be able to…” format, write a lesson objective. Your lesson objective should describe exactly what students will be able to do at the conclusion of the lesson. Use a strong verb to describe what students will be able to do. If your unit learning goal addresses the exact same content as your lesson, you can use your unit learning goal as your lesson objective.
- Consider multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression. As you are preparing to write your lesson, consider how you might include multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression in your lesson. Use your knowledge from class readings and materials to make these decisions. Consider the needs of your case study students as you are planning your strategies for universal design for learning in your lesson.
- Write a lesson plan. Download this template Download template. Write a lesson plan that includes principles of universal design for learning. Describe in detail how you will universally design learning outcomes, materials, methods and assessments.
-
Write a summary for each case study student. Although you have planned your lessons with your case study students in mind, in some cases, they may still need individualized accommodations to be successful on the assignment and master the content. Consider each case study student, consult their IEPs (James

Using the course readings and materials, write a summary about each case study student. Consider how you expect them to perform on the lesson with the plans for universal design for learning and the individual accommodations you have provided.
- Submit the completed Word doc on Canvas. Remember each person must submit their own lesson plan.
- Next week you will teach one of these lesson plans as a group.
