CONTENTS OF THE IEP

Each child in school who receives special education services has an IEP that is written specifically for them. Read the following article to understand the purpose of the IEP and what is contained in it. Pay careful attention to the section Supplementary Aides and Services to learn about the accommodations students with disabilities should receive in their general education classes.

What to look for:

  • What is the purpose of the IEP?
  • What is meant by the general education curriculum?
  • How often does the IEP team meet?
  • What are the components of the IEP?  

CASE STUDIES

You can see the four case study students' IEPs by clicking on the links below. The IEP documents can be overwhelming. As you look through each of the documents, see if you can answer the following questions.

What to look for:

  • What is the student's present level of academic performance and functional achievement (PLAAFP)?
  • How much time will each student spend in special education?
  • What are the supplementary aides and services for each student?
  • What accommodations will each student receive on end of year tests?

IEP TEAM

Each student with a disability who receives special education services, has their own IEP team. This team is made up of school professionals and the student’s parents. Read this article to understand more about the IEP team.

What to look for:

  • Who participates on the IEP team and what are their roles?
  • What is your role as the regular education teacher?
  • Since parents play an important role on the IEP team, what will the team need to consider if a parent is not fluent in English or is deaf?

IEP MEETING

The following video and article will help you understand what happens in an IEP meeting and your responsibilities as a general education teacher.

What to look for:

  • Who develops the first IEP for a student? How much time does the school have to develop the IEP once it is determined that the child needs special education services?
  • At minimum, how often must the IEP be reviewed?
  • What information should be covered at the IEP meeting?
  • What are special factors that should be considered?
  • Who can be excused from an IEP meeting? What must take place for them to be excused?
  • Who decides on placement in the least restrictive environment?
  • What is the regular education teacher’s responsibilities after the IEP meeting? 

IEP VIDEOS

Below you will find four videso clips of James Rojas' IEP meeting.  Watch each clip and ask yourself what the role of each of the members of the IEP team is in the meeting.  There will be two general education teachers attending the IEP meeting for James.  The first is Mary Buynack who is his Math teacher.  The second is Nicole who is his Theater teacher. The special education teacher, Carrie Eichelberger, and the vice principle, Shawn Edwards, are also in attendance.  James' mother is also at the meeting.
