MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT FOR ALL STUDENTS

Tier.png

This graphic represents the concept of multi-tiered systems of support.  In the graphic you see a triangle divided into three tiers. These tiers represent academic and behavior supports that are designed to help students to be successful in their classes. All students receive tier one support, some students receive tier two support, and a few students receive tier three support. Students receive help according to their needs. You can see that Professional Learning Communities encircle the triangle.  The members of the Professional Learning Community engage in an ongoing process in which they work together to determine who needs assistance and what supports will work best for each student. This course will focus on the various parts of this model and will teach you to work successfully as a part of a professional learning community.

COURSE MODEL

In this video, you will see how a high school uses multi-tiered systems of support for all struggling students. This course is based on the concept of multi-tiered systems of support. Watch this video to get an introduction to how a school used this model to help all students. You will learn how to use multi-tiered systems of support to help students with disabilities throughout this course.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Lessons

Each lesson will follow a similar format. You will have several reading and video assignments. You should read or watch all provided materials in preparation for the quiz and the assignments associated with the lesson. There is a study guide provided for each lesson. In most cases, you will not submit the study guide, but completing it will prepare you for taking the quiz. The study guide and quiz will cover all assigned readings.

After you complete the readings you will see a list of assignments to complete for the lesson. Please complete all assignments on the list for each lesson. Watch carefully for due dates and where to submit assignments. Some assignments are completed individually and some are completed with your Professional Learning Community consisting of other members of the class.

Some lessons provide optional readings. You will not be assessed on these readings, but they provide additional information about the lesson topic if you are interested in learning more.

This is a 2 credit online class. You should expect to spend 4-5 hours each week completing assignments for this course.  This is equivalent to the amount of time you would spend attending and completing assignments for a 2 credit face-to-face course.  Please set aside 4-5 hours a week so you can be successful in this course.

Course Readings

You do not need a textbook for this course; instead, online readings will be provided for each lesson.

Study Guides

Study guides will assess your knowledge and completion of the readings or videos in the lessons. The study guides will help you focus on the most important aspects of the content and prepare you for the quizzes.

Quizzes

Quizzes will assess your knowledge and completion of the readings for various lessons. Make sure you can answer the study guide questions for each lesson before you begin the quiz. Quizzes are closed book and taken in one sitting.

Discussion Boards

Discussion boards will give you the opportunity to collaborate with other classmates and express your opinions and ideas about the concepts you are learning.  Discussion board assignments will require you to post about a topic and return later to the discussion to comment on ideas from your peers. Please watch for due dates for both the initial post and the comments on your peers' posts.

PLC Assignments

You will sign up for a professional learning community and learn more about your PLC group by meeting with the group and the professor during week 2. You will complete several PLC Assignments with your group members. Group work will be completed in several ways.  These may include

Please read directions carefully for each PLC assignment to understand how to work with your group.

Field Experience Hours

You will complete a 12-hour field experience during this course. You will gain valuable experience as you interact with students with disabilities, observe how students and teachers interact in classrooms, and see the benefits and concerns of addressing the needs of students in inclusive settings. You will complete at least 4 of those 12 hours in a secondary general education classroom that includes at least one student with a disability. Some disabilities will be obvious and some disabilities will be harder to notice. Ask the teacher if there are students who have an IEP in the classroom. The IEP is a legal document that describes the student’s services for their disabilities. By asking if there are students who have IEP’s in the classroom, you will know if there are students with disabilities who are included in the classroom where you are completing your hours. There must be at least one student with an IEP in the classroom where you are completing your hours.

Field Experience Assignments

During your 12 hours of field experience, you will complete 3 assignments that will guide your learning during your field experience.  In the field experience assignment, you will be given a choice of 6 assignments to choose from that you will complete in your field experience classroom(s).  You will choose 2 of these assignments to complete.  In addition, you will see three assignments to choose from that can be completed outside of your field experience classroom.  You should choose one of these assignments to complete.  In total, you will complete 2 of the first six assignments and 1 of the second three assignments.  These assignments will be turned in at the end of the semester.
