Updates and New Features - BYU Canvas

BYU Canvas Info Center Updates and New Features - BYU Canvas

March 11, 2025

The following features and changes go into effect on March 11.

Apply score to ungraded

This feature, which will be found in individual assignment options in the Canvas Course Gradebook, will allow teachers to insert a score to all students whose assignment is ungraded.

Course Pacing

Canvas will allow teachers to configure automatic pacing of assignments. While this is not likely to be used for standard semester / term-based classes, it could be used for instruction where students enter and participate in a course asynchronously- Canvas will automatically assign new students due dates for assignments, paced according to teacher-set preferences and blackouts. This feature is in the preview stage, and may experience late adjustments.

Temporary Enrollments

This allows Canvas administrators to configure users with temporary enrollments based on another user’s access. For example, a subsitute teacher can quickly have the access they need based on the regular teacher's enrollments, and configurable to expire at a given time. To use this feature, submit a temporary enrollment request (along with pertinent information on the access needed for the user’s temporary enrollment) to canvas_team@byu.edu. (BYU Online teachers needing a similar configuration should submit their requests to the BYU Online office.)

View ungraded as zero in Gradebook

This feature, found in the course Canvas Gradebook, allows teachers to view students’ grade totals as if all ungraded assignments were to receive zero credit. This view is only to present “what-if” information- Actual scores and the course grade total remain unaffected. This view available for teachers, not students.

Emojis in Submission Comments

This feature will allow emojis (graphic emoticons) to be included in student and teacher comments that accompany student assignment submissions. Graphic emojis have been displayed for some time in Canvas - This change adds an emoji selection tool to submission comments to make finding and using emojis easier.
