Cross-listing: Written Instructions
Cross-listing is the process by which you can combine multiple sections of the same class into one single course in Canvas.
Note: Cross-listing should be performed before classes begin, or as early in the semester or term as possible. As student work is stored in each section.
Example:
You teach three identical sections of Math at different times. The content between each section is identical. You don't want to have to manage the content in all three sections.
Solution:
Cross-listing! Here's how it works:
At BYU, each section is set-up as an individual course. In this case, Section 001, Section 002 and Section 003 each have their own course. With cross-listing, you will move sections 002 and 003 together with Section 001.
- Select your target course. (In this example, it will be the course for Section 001.) Navigate to this course in Canvas, and make a note of the course Canvas ID- It's the number that appears at the end of the URL when you are at that course's homepage: (http://byu.instructure.com/courses/9876)- In this example, the course ID number is 9876
- Go to section settings for the section you would like to move: (i.e. Section 002). Click on 'Settings,' then on the 'Sections' tab, then click on the section link. (There will be only one option.)
- Click on the 'Cross-list this section' button
- Enter the target course ID you noted from step 1
The section will then be moved from its original location into the target course. Its original course will then be empty, and the target course will contain two sections. Repeat the cross-listing process for each of the sections you wish to group.
