Coaching Principles & Why They Matter

Mother and daughter holding hands illustration. Parenting like a coach isn’t about having the perfect plan or the perfect speech. It’s about showing up with presence, curiosity, and belief. Those are the qualities that help our children grow, especially when life gets messy. Instead of just reacting in the moment (fixing, worrying, or pulling back) we’re going to explore a different way: parenting like a coach.

Now, when we say coach, we don’t mean a sports coach shouting from the sidelines. We mean a supportive guide who asks questions, listens deeply, and helps their child take ownership of the challenge. A coach builds confidence, motivation, and problem-solving, not just compliance.

Focus on the Real problem, not the first problem. Stanier, 2016

Coaching is about unlocking potential and helping students learn and grow rather than simply giving them answers. It’s less about fixing and more about creating space for reflection, problem-solving, and ownership.

As parents, that can feel counterintuitive. We want to help, smooth things over, or step in. But real coaching means resisting the urge to rescue or control. Instead, we ask thoughtful questions that help students connect the dots and then let them take the next step.

Of course, sometimes stepping in is necessary, like when a student is unsafe or truly stuck. But in everyday struggles (homework battles, sibling conflict, big emotions), those moments are often golden opportunities for coaching. When we pause and approach with curiosity instead of control, we send the message: “I believe you can do this. Your thinking matters.” That message builds confidence, motivation, and resilience.

Coaching isn’t always easy. It takes patience and practice to hold back from fixing. But the payoff is huge: students who know they can think, reflect, and grow. Not because we solved it for them, but because we believed they could.

We’ve looked at what coaching is. Next, let’s talk about what it isn’t, and what really makes it work.

Coaching is Not:

Advising, consulting, or mentoring
Taking charge of someone's problem
Providing solutions
Therapy or Counseling
Cheerleading
Being the Expert

What Makes Coaching Work:

Being present
Listening without fixing
Asking great questions
Focusing on the person, not the problem
Fostering curiosity
Mirroring back their thinking

Connect: Coaching Your Child

The hardest part of coaching our students isn’t remembering the right questions. It’s staying calm when emotions run high. Maybe your student is melting down, shutting down, or snapping back, and suddenly you feel your own frustration or fear rising too.

In those moments it’s easy to react: to lecture, to rescue, or to retreat. Not because we’re bad parents, but because we’re human. When our emotional brain takes over, our parenting brain gets pushed aside. That’s why coaching isn’t only about guiding our students. It’s also about regulating ourselves.

You can’t coach effectively when you’re emotionally hijacked. The most important tool in a parent-coach’s toolbox isn’t a perfect script. It’s the ability to stay calm, grounded, and present even when things get messy. That doesn’t mean you won’t feel frustrated. It means noticing when you’re about to react and choosing to steady yourself instead.

One tool that helps is Dr. Dan Siegel’s Hand Model of the Brain. He uses a simple hand gesture to explain what happens when stress takes over. Our “thinking brain,” the part responsible for empathy, problem-solving, and self-control, goes offline. The emotional brain takes charge, and we “flip our lid.” Learning to recognize this moment gives us the chance to pause, breathe, and bring calm back online. Learn more about that in the following video.

It’s hard to respond with patience when we’re emotionally flooded. Coaching can’t happen from that place. We can’t listen well, ask thoughtful questions, or guide growth if our own brain is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze. We don’t need to be perfect, just aware enough to steady ourselves and choose calm instead of reactivity. Calm is the foundation of coaching, not because it fixes everything, but because it opens the door to connection, clarity, and growth.

Even when we stay calm, another challenge appears: the urge to fix. We often jump in with advice before our student has even finished speaking. The problem is that advice can miss the real issue, reflect our own biases, or leave students feeling less capable.

The coaching mindset offers another way. Pause, stay curious, and ask a question first. Something as simple as “What do you think your next step could be?” can spark reflection and ownership. Coaching doesn’t just solve the immediate problem. It builds the deeper skills that fuel motivation and resilience.

It takes patience and practice to resist the instinct to fix. But when we do, we give our students something greater than answers. We give them confidence in their own ability to think, learn, and grow.
