The Pygmalion Effect

The Pygmalion Effect reminds us that what we believe about our students matters because it shapes what they come to believe about themselves. When we parent with faith in their growth, we build the foundation for confidence, resilience, and character that will carry them through every season of life.

One of the most famous researchers in this area is psychologist Dr. Robert Rosenthal, known for his groundbreaking work on the Pygmalion Effect.

Learn: What is the Pygmalion Effect

Have you ever noticed how your belief in someone can give them the confidence to do something hard? That’s the Pygmalion Effect. This effect is a psychological principle that shows how expectations can shape outcomes. When we believe someone is capable, we tend to act in ways that support their success, and they often rise to meet those expectations. In the same vein, low expectations can unintentionally stunt an individual's success.

Originally studied in classrooms, the Pygmalion Effect revealed that when teachers believed students could succeed, the students performed significantly better even when their ability levels were average. Researchers found that positive expectations create a kind of invisible support system: more patience, more encouragement, and more trust in students' abilities. When we expect someone to grow, succeed, or overcome difficulty, we often act in ways (even unconsciously) that support those outcomes. And more often than not, they rise to meet those expectations.

And it’s just as true for parents. When we believe our children can grow, they begin to believe it too. The (sometimes silent) messages we send shape how they see themselves and what they believe they can do.

That’s why it’s so important to notice how your beliefs about your students' potential manifest in your words, tone, and actions, especially in moments of stress or failure. The most effective parenting combines warmth and structure: high emotional support + high expectations. This powerful balance creates an environment where they feel both safe and challenged.

This video shows how expectations can shape behavior and performance. It’s a great conversation starter for reflecting on how your beliefs influence your students' experience.

Remember, just as the video said, "absolutely everyone can get better at virtually anything...You are designed to be continuously improvable." You and your students. Knowing that can and will make all the difference. Growth over perfection. Faith over fear. Belief over limitation.

Connect: Your Child's Potential

Our expectations as parents show up in subtle but powerful ways. In the way we help with homework, respond to failure, or celebrate effort. When we expect our student to grow, we offer more chances to try again, more space to think for themselves, and more faith in their ability to learn.

Belief in your student's potential shows up in small, subtle ways:

How you respond when they forget something
Whether you praise the outcome or the effort
How you handle repeated mistakes

Your student is constantly learning what you believe about them through your tone, body language, and words.

One significant way your student is learning from you comes from the labels you are placing on them, whether or not you realize it. Labels like "smart", "lazy", "athletic", or "troublemaker", even when said in good spirits, can influence your students' desire to live up to them. That's why the expectations and labels we communicate to our students matter so much: they can either limit or lift them to success or failure. So, how should we communicate with our children to motivate and encourage them toward growth?

Choose labels that are grounded in truth. One example is the label learner. When we call our students and ourselves learners, we are affirming these truths: we can improve, we aren't stuck, and we are becoming something more.

Try: Helping Your Child Become

Building a mindset of belief doesn't require a major overhaul in your parenting styles—just intentionality in how we show up. Try one or two of these this week:

Practice Growth-Language

Move from this: "You're a natural at this!" To this: "You've been putting in so much effort, and it's paying off!" This helps your student focus on what they can control: effort, strategy, and persistence.

Step Back so They Can Step Up

Next time your student faces a problem (a forgotten assignment, friend troubles, or a schedule conflict, pause before jumping in.
Ask them: "What do you think you can do about it?" "Do you want help coming up with a plan to fix it?"

Share a Story

Tell your student about a time when you struggled and how your persistence helped you grow. These stories show that even adults don't have it all figured out and that it takes grit! Encourage them when they need help, support when needed, and always see them as capable to grow.
