Getting Started With Online Learning Icon Taking an online class can feel different from taking an in-person class. Online learning often means you need to be more proactive—seeking support and staying involved with the coursework. In this section, you will create your own Learning Plan, explore useful online resources, plan a schedule that works for you, and practice important help-seeking skills.

This page is designed so you can explore each section based on what you need. But if you use all the tools here, you’ll be able to:

Develop a personal learning plan to support your academic and personal growth.
Navigate your online classes confidently.
Organize a realistic weekly schedule using Canvas resources.

First Things First: Plan for Your Success

Welcome to your first step in online learning! You can have a better online experience by thinking about why, when, where, and how you learn best. By understanding your goals, choosing the best times and places for study, and using effective strategies, you’ll create a plan that fits your needs. This tool will help you explore these ideas and build your own learning plan. Use the prompts to discover what works for you and take charge of your online learning experience.

Navigating an Online Class

Find Your Online Classes on Canvas

BYU uses Canvas, a learning management system, for many of its online courses. The tips below will help you get familiar with Canvas.

Once you’re inside your course, most classes use the “Modules” tab to organize the lessons and assignments. That’s your go-to place to find everything you need to learn and complete your coursework.

Find Your Online Classes on Buzz

BYU also uses another learning management system called Buzz for some of its online courses. Use the tips below to get started.

Once you choose your course, the home page is usually the best place to see all the lessons and assignments. You can also use the hamburger menu in the top-left corner to find other areas of the course, like your gradebook.

Set a Schedule

Online classes are flexible, but it’s easy to procrastinate if you’re not careful. Use your freedom to complete top-priority tasks and maybe even get ahead!

Keep in mind that BYU classes usually expect about 3 hours of work each week for every 1 credit. For example, a 3-credit course means around 9 hours of work every week. Plan specific times to focus on each class so you don’t fall behind.
