The four elements of causality

Here are the four elements of causality we will be using in this course:

• Theory (is there reason to believe that X causes Y?)
• Time order (does X occur before Y?)
• Correlation (when X changes, does Y change? If Y changes, has X also (previously) changed?)
• Rule out all plausible alternative hypotheses (have we ruled out or controlled for competing alternative explanations?)
